How pianos work

An explanation text for year 4 and P5 about pianos, linking to the topic of sound and vibrations and waves. Some of the most amazing music in the world is played on pianos - but how does pressing a few black and white keys create such a range of beautiful sounds? This musical instrument has the widest range of notes, covering more than seven octaves (each with eight notes).

The downloadable reading pack includes:

  • An A4 reading spread for you to print.
  • Reading comprehension question and answer sheets, differentiated using our magnifying glasses key (on the bottom right). One magnifying glass indicates easier and two means harder.
